Area Layouts

Al Askerberg, Columbus

Al Askerberg's OT&W, an On30 layout of a fictional line in Depression-era Maine, is inspired by the Maine two-footers. The scenery and architecture, however, are designed to evoke the spirit of the time and place. Everything except some Bachmann Porters and die cast automobiles is either scratch built or bashed. The hand laid track work is complete except for a second turntable, and the scenery is about 75% complete. Also under construction is an S scale standard gauge layout. The hand laid track work was just begun in January. Much, of the track work was completed and some scenery was in place. This line is inspired by late 40s short line railroading.

Keith Clark, Bloomington

The Ellettsville Northern is a freelanced HO railroad occupying a 15'x27' room. The track plan is a folded over dog bone with 180' of mainline consisting of hand laid code 83 rail and turnouts laid on homasote. Mainline radius is a minimum 28" with #6 turnouts or greater and a 2 percent maximum grade. Cab control (four throttles using rotary switches for assignment) is used for the layout with a conventional block system. The layout height is 48" to 54" and uses L-girder construction. There is a large stub ended yard, an intermediate smaller yard and a staging area, which is reached by way of a helix. Scenery on the railroad is approximately 50 percent complete and uses plaster over paper bag to depict hilly terrain with rock cuts and out croppings. Photo Slide 1 - Photo Slide 2

Dan Goins, Martinsville - HO

Overview Dan's HO railroad models the Santa Fe during the late 50's and early 60's, representing New Mexico, Arizona and part of Colorado in a 35' X 15' room. The layout is walk around cab control and can be operated by one person with up to 7 for a full operating session. Layout construction is basic L girder with both open grid work and table top in the yards. The track is code 83 for all of the visible track. The hidden return and staging is code 100. Ron Lane's Mann's Creek, Columbus

Ron Lane's Mann's Creek Railway recreates scenes from his research and the book "West Virginia Narrow Gauge-Mann's Creek Railway", with a standard gauge C&O loop, and a point-to-point Mann's Creek Railway in HON3. The model railroad is small, housed in a room approximately 11 x 15 feet. An NCE DCC system is just being installed now, while sections of the C&O trackage were handlaid about 30 years ago! All structures are scratchbuilt (including mock-ups!), and the scenery is 50 percent complete, most of it roughed in with Styrofoam sections.
Ron's Clifftop mine complex won first place-dioramas at the 1966 National NMRA convention. He has been awarded the Master Builder-Structures, and Master Builder-Cars achievement certificates, as well as the Model Railroad Author certificate. He is working on the prototype model, scenery, civil, and electrical requirements now. Also on display is his Sewell telegraph tower, a full-scale octagonal gazebo built from an 1892 C&O drawing.

Bryan Lemonds, Bloomington

The Utah Division of the Denver & Rio Grande Western is a HO model railroad in a 25'x70' basement room. The railroad follows the Rio Grand from Grand Junction Colorado, over Soldier Summit, and on to Salt Lake City, Utah during 1953. The trackwork is handlaid and the benchwork is studwall. The trackplan is a sincere linear design with open staging and features a dual helper grade. The control system is Easy DCC with Radio Control Throttles and Soundtraxx and Digitrax decoders. The benchwork is complete and the mainline should be operational for the April Show. Photo Slide 1 - Photo Slide 2

Dave McKalip, Spencer

McKalip The Monon is an HO model of the Lafayette to Bedford portion of its namesake railroad. The time period is late 50s to 1971. Construction of the E-shaped, 17'X20' layout started in 1992 and the L-girder benchwork is completed. The once-around, 125' mainline is code 83 flextrack laid on homasote supported by spline subroadbed. Trains are controlled using conventional DC cab control. Scenery is in place on about 1/3 of the railroad, specifically in the Bloomington and Gosport areas. Plaster over Styrofoam finished with Sculptamold and ground foam was used. The backdrop is painted Masonite. At 57" high, the railroad is designed for eye-level viewing of the Monon trains. Photo Slide 1 - Photo Slide 2 - Photo Slide 3 - Photo Slide 4

Pete Pedigo's large scale layout

updated 8-17-06
Pete Pedigo's New Unionville & Western RR is a 1/8th-scale model railroad currently under construction on 45 acres between New Unionville and Bloomington, Indiana. This scale operates on a track gauge of 7 1/2". Persons in this hobby are called Live Steamers because of the steam engines so many own and operate along with electric and diesel models. The topography for this railroad consists of 15 acres of hilly pasture with a lake and 30 acres of heavily forested rough topography. A 175', poured in place, concrete tunnel was built to get from one side of the ridge to the other.
While excavating for the tunnel a solid layer of limestone was encountered. It was necessary to remove 2 feet of limestone from the floor of the tunnel to keep the grades under the 3% maximum desired for the railroad. The railroad currently has 4100 feet of track operational. This includes the tunnel and two bridges. All of the remaining right of way has been graded and 3 bridges remain to be constructed. When completed it will be an 8000' railroad with signaled blocks and sidings for bi-directional operation.

Steve Studley, Bloomington

Southwest Indiana provides the modeling inspiration for the Midwest Central. The MC is an HO free-lance railroad operating as a bridge route from Vincennes to Indianapolis with branchlines to the coalfields around Linton and to the Ohio river at Alton. The era is modern with high-horsepower EMD engines powering the trains. Interchange is an important consideration to midwest railroads and the MC is no exception. Interchange traffic is provided, in part, by (Keith Clark's) the Ellettsville Northern at Clark Junction.

Construction of the linear design, double-deck, open-grid, plywood benchwork started in February 1997 with about two-thirds of the mainline currently in place. Visible trackwork is handlaid code 83 on Homasote supported by spline subroadbed. Code 100 flex is used for hidden trackage including the double-track helix. The railroad was designed from the start with operatons -car cards and track warrants- in mind. Train control is with DCC. Photo Slide 1

Paul Surburg, Bloomington

Paul models the Pennsylvania Railroad, and from time to time changes the era represented by the railroad. He can depict the 50's or the 60's or even the modern era, (Conrail). :-( His layout is built into his two car garage and covers a 15 foot by 20 foot area. This is a two level layout with a staging area on a third level. His layout is mostly landscaped. He said that because of the size of his layout, he likes to run long trains of 20 to 30 cars. He also likes to run passenger trains. Paul uses block control and has walk around throttles.

Bob Talbot's L&N Railroad, Bloomington

The Laurel River division of the L&N railroad is set in the hills of Eastern Kentucky, extending northward to the Cincinnati area. The southern terminus is at the Clinchfield-Dante W. Va. area. This "freelanced" prototype railroad is a point to point layout, with each terminus continuing via a central helix to a lower staging yard and balloon track. Operations allow trains to come "on line" at each terminus, proceed through the layout from either north or south, and return to the helix after each run through. Thus far, after six years of construction, all benchwork, and trackwork has been completed. Operations have begun, and scenery is now in the initial stages. The layout is housed in a basement room 18 X 38, with the track level set at 51 inches off the floor.
